Peace and the future clash, they don’t go hand in hand. You have to privilege either one or the other. What do the contenders think? What is Putin’s Russia betting on and what is the West totally US-led betting on? Last but not least, what is Zelensky‘s Ukraine betting on?
The international politics of the new Ukraine
On some fundamental points we all have the glass ball, and we can read the future. During his election campaign for the presidency, Zelenski was absolutely clear in that he would steer Kiev towards Europe and NATO. Hence his travels to Brussels and New York, as president. So the indirect message to Putin wasn’t a comedian’s joke, and Putin got it right. And he began to shudder and fidget and to immediately take action, already feeling defeated or threatened.
An actor who is a man of action
The movie “Servant of the people“, with Zelensky playing a teacher and suddenly becoming president of Ukraine had already alerted Putin. Especially when the team of Kvartal 95, Zelensky’s production company, gave its name to the party it created in relation to the candidacy of their boss. Putin was also alerted, because Zelensky, who was born in 1978, is a man of digital and mass media action also in terms of communication, supported by his professional team of valiant communicators.
Putin’s mistakes
We have also to considerer that his father, Oleksandr Zelensky, is a computer scientist, head of the Department of Cybernetics and Computing Hardware at the State University. Putin immediately understood that with art – more precisely, in this case, comedy mixed with up-to-date communicative knowledge – you have to behavior seriously. And his fear widens when he widens his gaze to neighboring Poland, Finland and Sweden. He feels surrounded.
So he had to change tactics and plans. He had to open up to dialogue, modernizing his nation and abandoning Cold War sentiments and hatred for the United States. Of course we can no say that the latter behaviors in the saints’ way, having waged the worst wars and wars-like fights, and in the worst possible way, not to mention that today that nation has an uncertain future.
He feels like a czar, but he knows he is not.
Putin should have developed modern projects, even alternative ones on the ideological level. Only in this way would he have solved his problem of survival and a better prospect for his Russia which he unwisely considers his. The leopard cannot change its spots. It wasn’t easy to him to turn a fundamentalist military formation supported by old ideas prevailing at the time of his youth. He feels like a czar, but he knows he is not.
Towards new assets
In any case, today a new structure is required (see the article by our Giovanni Caruselli, “Special Ukraine/The failure of the spirit of Yalta”, FYINpaper, 9 February 2022). But keep in mind that it is no longer time for winners and losers. Wars – inevitable, since they are in the DNA of human beings – will likely no longer be head-to-head clashes, and the prospects they offer are only of economic and environmental damage to the whole of humanity.
From the stage of comedy to the theater of the world
Zelensky leapt from the comedy stage to the world theater. He must have appeared to Putin as a magician who skillfully manipulates today’s communication, being ambitious and capable, both in his old profession and in politics. Two extremes: he, Putin, monocentric, the other polycentric. Old times, new times, kind Joe and Vladimir.

La pace e il futuro stridono, non vanno mano nella mano. O privilegi l’una o privilegi l’altro. Che ne pensano i contendenti? Su cosa scommette la Russia di Putin e su cosa scommette l’occidente fino ad ora totalmente a guida Usa? Last but not least, su cosa scommette l’Ucraina di Zelensky?
La politica internazionale della nuova Ucraina
Su taluni punti fondamentali tutti abbiamo la palla di vetro, e possiamo leggere il futuro. Durante la sua campagna elettorale per la presidenza, Zelensky non ha lasciato dubbi che avrebbe orientato Kiev verso l’Europa e la Nato. Da qui poi i suoi viaggi a Bruxelles e a New York, da presidente. Dunque il messaggio indiretto a Putin non era una battuta da comico, e Putin capì bene, eccome. E ha cominciato a fremere ed agitarsi per passare subito all’azione, sentendosi già sconfitto o minacciato.
Zelensky, un attore uomo d’azione
Il film “Servant of the people”, con Zelensky che interpreta un insegnate che improvvisamente diventa presidente lo aveva già allertato. Questo specialmente quando l’équipe di Kvartal 95, l’azienda di produzione di Zelensky, dà il proprio nome al partito che fa nascere proprio in rapporto alla candidatura del loro boss. Allertato, inoltre, Putin, perché Zelensky, nato nel 1978, è uomo di azione digitale e massmediale anche in fatto di comunicazione, peraltro supportato dal suo team professionale di valorosi comunicatori.
Gli errori di Putin
Per non dire che suo padre, Oleksandr Zelensky, è un informatico, capo del Dipartimento di Cibernetica e Computing Hardware nell’Università di Stato. Putin ha capito subito che con l’arte – più precisamente, in questo caso, la commedia mista a sapienza comunicativa aggiornatissima- non si scherza. E la sua paura si allarga quando egli allarga lo sguardo alle confinanti Polonia, Finlandia e Svezia. Si sente accerchiato. Doveva cambiare tattica e progetto. Doveva aprirsi al dialogo, modernizzando la sua nazione e abbandonando i sentimenti da guerra fredda e l’odio verso gli Stati Uniti. Non che questi ultimi siano dei santerelli, avendo condotto le peggiori guerre e simil-guerre, e nel peggiore dei modi possibili e oggi con un futuro incerto e di sicuro non radioso.
Si sente zar, ma sa di non esserlo.
Putin avrebbe dovuto elaborare progetti moderni, alternativi anche sul piano ideologico. Solo così avrebbe risolto il suo problema di sopravvivenza e di una migliore prospettiva per la sua Russia che malaccortamente considera sua. Il lupo perde il pelo ma non il vizio. Non è facile dare virate a una formazione militare integralista supportata da vecchie idee imperanti nella sua gioventù. Si sente zar, ma sa di non esserlo.
Verso nuovi assetti
In ogni caso, oggi si impone un nuovo assetto (rimandiamo all’articolo del nostro Giovanni Caruselli, “Speciale Ucraina/ Il fallimento dello spirito di Yalta”, FYINpaper, 9 febbraio 2022). Ma occorre tenere presente che non è più tempo di vincitori e vinti. Le guerre – inevitabili, essendo esse nel DNA degli esseri umani – verosimilmente non saranno più scontri frontali, e le prospettive che offrono sono soltanto di danni economici e ambientali all’umanità intera.
Dal palcoscenico della commedia al teatro del mondo
Zelensky è balzato dal palcoscenico della commedia al teatro del mondo. Deve essere apparso a Putin come un prestigiatore che manipola abilmente la comunicazione odierna, ambizioso e capace, tanto nella sua vecchia professione che in quella di politico. Due estremi: lui, Putin, monocentrico, l’altro policentrico. Vecchi tempi, nuovi tempi, gentili Joe e Vladimir.
