IHME Helsinki is a Finnish organization that every year promotes a contemporary art project linked to science and based on art as an interesting drive for change. This topic today is more important than ever, given the increasingly aggressive climate crisis. Art is a powerful tool, capable of conveying eco-social sensibility, able to educate and achieve a sustainable and democratic society. It is a miracle, a marvel, according to the meaning of the Finnish word ihme.
IHME 2021 and the artists Winderen and Paterson
Every year IHME involves an avant-garde artist who has to work out their own project. For ten years IHME has acted in this way, dealing with socially relevant issues. But the global warming has shifted the focus on the climate crisis.
The 2021 edition will be a special one, thanks to the Norwegian Jana Winderen and the Scottish Katie Paterson.
The sound installation by Jana Winderen
Winderen had been chosen for the previous edition but has been postponed due to the pandemic. Her sound installation Listening Through the Dead Zones has just started on August 6, and will be on this play until the 24th, same month, at the Rowing Stadium in Töölö on the coast of the Sea Baltic. The Norwegian’s installation, created in collaboration with Tony Myatt, will allow visitors to hear the sounds generated underwater by mammals, fish, crustaceans that live in the oceans and seas. The purpose of this site-specific installation is to detect the interactions of animals and plants with the human activities on them. Indeed the themes investigates by the artist are the pollution, the loss of biodiversity, which are in line with IHME’s commitment.
Katie Paterson’s incense
The second project, signed by the Scottish Katie Paterson, is To Burn, Forest, Fire. Her installation-performance consists of a series of incense ceremonies which will take place in September, in different sites, around Helsinki. An original scent coming from the mix of the first forest on Earth and the last forest tied to the climate crisis will be transformed into incense and then burned. L’arte sociale in Finlandia promossa da IHME
IHME Helsinki è una organizzazione finlandese che ogni anno cura e propone un progetto di arte contemporanea legato alla scienza. Crede nell’azione e confida nel ruolo dell’arte nel promuovere il cambiamento. Tema oggi più che mai attuale data la crisi climatica ogni anno più aggressiva. L’arte è uno strumento potente, in grado di veicolare la sensibilità eco-sociale. Capace di educare al raggiungimento di una società sostenibile e democratica. Un miracolo, una meraviglia, dal significato della parola ihme in finlandese.
IHME 2021 e le artiste Winderen e Paterson
Ogni anno IHME ingaggia un artista d’avanguardia e investe nel progetto da questi presentato. Per dieci anni IHME ha operato in tale modo, occupandosi di temi socialmente rilevanti. Ma l’accelerazione della crisi climatica ha spostato il focus su questa topica.
L’edizione 2021 sarà differente con le due artiste presentate: la norvegese Jana Winderen e la scozzese Katie Paterson.
L’installazione sonora di Jana Winderen
Winterson, scelta per l’anno 2020, è stata posticipata di un anno: a causa della pandemia la sua installazione sonora Listening Through the Dead Zones è stata aperta al pubblico il 6 agosto e sarà visitabile fino al 24 dello stesso mese al Rowing Stadium di Töölö, sulla costa del Mar baltico. L’installazione della norvegese, realizzata in collaborazione con Tony Myatt, permetterà ai visitatori di ascoltare i suoni che si generano sott’acqua da mammiferi, pesci, crostacei che vivono negli oceani e nei mari. Lo scopo dell’installazione site-specific è rilevare le interazioni fra animali e piante, da un lato e, dall’altro, l’influenza delle attività umane su di esse. Infatti i temi investigati dall’artista norvegese sono l’inquinamento, la perdita di biodiversità, del tutto in linea con gli obiettivi di IHME.
L’incenso di Katie Paterson
Il secondo progetto è presentato dalla scozzese Katie Paterson. Si tratta di To Burn, Forest, Fire, installazione-performance che consiste in una serie di cerimonie dell’incenso, in differenti siti intorno a Helsinki, che avranno luogo a settembre. Il profumo della prima foresta sulla Terra e dell’ultima foresta durante la crisi climatica sarà trasformato in incenso e quindi bruciato. Le date delle performance sono costantemente aggiornate sul sito web di IHME.
